„PROJECT ON" 2020

he Korean Cultural Center in Germany is offering artists an opportunity to exhibit in our galley space, gallery damdam. This open call program <Project ON>, which launched in 2017, has started to provide more opportunities for artists to showcase their work in the capital of contemporary art, Berlin, Germany. Furthermore, it is a project initiated to promote an exchange between the Korean and German art scene.

We cordially invite artists and curators to submit their application.

1. Competition theme: where does the wind blow and where does it go?

For centuries, it depended on the winds that gold, spices, and grain, as well as the knowledge and culture of various civilizations spread across planet Earth. The intimate knowledge of the trade winds, that drove sailing ships across the world's oceans, was an important prerequisite for queens, emperors, and merchants to establish their own empires and fleets. The knowledge of where from and where to the wind blows is the legacy of the slave trade, but also of the aristocrats among the buccaneer, such as William Dampier (1651-1715) who with their piracy and voyages of discovery created essential foundations of modern trade and cartography.

The dominant modern philosophy in Europe is deeply influenced by imperialism. On the contrary, there is the drifting poetic philosophy of Édouard Glissant. His idea of "Poetics of Relations" is entirely determined by the ocean, such as the Pacific, as well as the movements of the current. What if we all lived on islands in the future and everything depended on how we communicate between each other and how quickly and safely we moved between the islands? Navigating would become a major and indispensable cultural technique.

The worldviews of old Europe have a past. They've become memories. Project ON urges artists to re-learn “how to read winds”. Understanding where the wind is blowing from and where it is blowing to becomes vital for a future that will be decisively determined from the perspective of the oceans once again. Korea has a strong connection to the Pacific. From there, new identities, new futures can be developed as spaces of possibility. It's a challenge for the arts. - Dr. Prof. Siegfried Zielinski
