Artists in Residency - NEKaTOENEa, Basque Country

The residence of creation - contemporary art welcomes the artist in a studio-apartment of the renovated farm NEKaTOENEa. It is located in the heart of the Domaine d'Abbadia in Hendaye, protected natural site of the Basque Corniche and property of the Conservatoire du Littoral. The environment of this residence offers a diversity of natural environments (coastline, meadows, forest, orchard, built heritage ...) and topics of scientific investigations (geology, fauna, flora, environment ...). Due to its geographical location, in the Basque Country, between France and Spain, at the boundary between land and ocean space, the residence is also influenced by the notions of borders (interstate, linguistic, geographical).


The NEKaTOENEa residency program is developed and managed by the BASQUE COASTAL SCI. Association bearing the national label of Permanent Center of Initiative to the Environment, whose activities are supervised by a team of employees working in the fields of science, culture and education. www.nekatoenea.eu, www.cpie-littoral-basque.eu

SPECIFICITY

This residence is dedicated to research and creation.
The approach proposed by the artist, and outlined in the note of intent, must be specific to the context of the residency.

CONDITIONS

The four-month residency is aimed at professional artists with an already established artistic background who have not recently benefited from a residency in Aquitaine. The artist must be able to make bills. Applications will be given for both art and sciences (natural sciences) and proposing projects in line with the location or activities of the Basque coastal CPIE.

PERIOD AND DURATION

The creative residency will ideally break down into 3 phases:
1. Initial pre-visit: ONE WEEK between the end of October and the middle of December 2019. This first week very early on allows the artist to get to know the territory, the cultural actors, and partners in order to better understand and prepare his residence.
2. Stay in residence and preparation of the exhibition: Four months will be devoted to the creation including the design / assembly of the exhibition of end of residence. The exact period will be defined with the artist according to his availability (preferably THREE MONTHS in spring: April / May / June and then ONE MONTH between September and November 2020)
3. Restitution: A restitution of the residence will be reflected and programmed with the artist and the partners of the residence. This restitution is not the final objective of the residence but considered as an additional tool, a field of experimentation.

STAFFING
Fees charged to the structure:

  • Scholarship: fixed price of 1400 € per effective month of presence in residence for a total of 5600 € TTC.
  • Travel: participation to the expenses return (maximum amount refundable 500 € TTC on justifying).
  • Production support: maximum amount on invoices 1200 € TTC.
  • Testimony of the residency: in the form of a printed edition, virtual or multimedia, of a writing

copy will be shared between the host structure and the artist (maximum amount refundable 2000 € TTC on invoices). The artist must be able to issue invoices.

Fees charged to the artist:
Costs related to everyday life (food, travel and transportation during the residency ....).
The artist must compulsorily take out liability and rental insurance for the duration of his/her stay. A certificate must be attached to the hosting agreement.

CONDITIONS OF HOSTING
Provision of:

  • duplex accommodation in the Nekatoenea house in the heart of the Abbadia Estate,
  • a space of creation, workshop not equipped of 36m ², annexed to the flat,
  • wifi access.
  • The expenses of the flows (water, electricity, wifi) are taken care of the city of Hendaye.

The apartment and the place of creation being located in the very heart of the protected natural site oblige the artist to strictly comply with the rules of the Domain. (Cars, bikes, dogs are forbidden)
No computer equipment is available.

PARTICIPATION IN AN AWARENESS PROGRAM

The cultural team of CPIE LITTORAL BASQUE will set up mediation actions around the presence of the artist, to enable him to present his approach, his artistic research as well as his process of creation (reflection, experimentation, realization). The artist will participate in this program of awareness of contemporary art for the local population by participating in:
1. A maximum of two presentations of his work towards cultural actors and the general public, on both sides of the border, one in Aquitaine and one in Euskadi.
2. A presentation of the creative process towards the general public; workshop open house on a day, or a speech.
As a result of the relationships established with our partners, the artist may have to develop other projects or services.
Examples: conference, supervision of a "workshop" with art schools, artistic and cultural education projects with schoolchildren.
The artist is also invited to make other proposals that can enhance this residence.

SELECTION

The artist will be selected by a jury made up of art professionals and members of CPIE LITTORAL BASQUE.
 

CRITERIA

  • The quality of the artistic path.
  • The requirement and the originality of the artistic approach.
  • The ability of the artist to invest in a program to raise awareness of contemporary art in favor of the local population (public presentation, proposal of work shop ...).
  • The motivations that drive the artist's candidacy.

CALENDAR OF SELECTION

Deadline for receipt of applications: 19 May 2019 at midnight (deadline).
Preselection: end of June 2019
Jury: early October 2019

  • Send your note of intent (2 A4 pages maximum) by integrating project tracks.
  • Save the document in PDF format by naming it with your NAME_FirstName.
  • Attach your portfolio which must include: a text of your artistic approach, your CV, images of your works and exhibition shots. Limit the weight of the document and save the document with SURNAME_Name.
  • You can support your application with a video recording of up to 3 minutes explaining your motivation for the residency. Save this video with your SURNAME_Name.
  • Use online file transfer platforms, ex. WeTransfer.

  • In the days following the receipt of your file, you will receive an email confirming the registration of your application.
