The 8th International İzmir Sculpture Workshop

The 8th International İzmir Sculpture Workshop, organized by İzmir Metropolitan Municipality” will be realized in two sections.  First Part take place between 20 May-12 July 2020 on the theme of ''Peace'' and ''The exchange of populations'' with bronze material. Second Part, will take place 1 September-1 October 2020 with stone and metal material, and free theme.

For workshop in BRONZE:

Theme: “Peace” (in memory of those who lost their lives in Ankara Railway Station massacre, October 10, 2015
A sculpture project that will speak of life and solidarity, which tells us to stay in the hope and resistance while deeply experiencing the sadness of this crime against humanity and will commemorate our losses and remind us of call for justice is expected.

Place: Asteğmen Besim Bey Parkı ( Liman Caddesi / AtatürkCaddesi)
Asteğmen Besim Bey Park, which meets the main gate of the İzmir Alsancak Train Station, has been chosen as the area where the “Peace” statue will be placed due to its symbolic meaning.
Asteğmen Besim Bey Park, which is rich in tall trees and green texture, creates a quiet and serene environment. The park is one of the entry points to the city center where the pedestrian traffic is very busy due to its position.

Scale: The area where the statue will be placed in the Park is marked in visuals. The artist is free on the sculpture scale for this area. If the work is selected, the artist and the administration will exchange views on the scale of application.
The area where the statue will be placed will be rearranged by the administration together with the sculpture designer. However, the artist can design the surrounding area of ​​the sculpture and the plan of the use of the park without interfering with the green texture.

Theme: “Population Exchange'' (In Memory of the 1923 Population Exchange)
These partnerships bring nations who share pain closer to each other.
A sculpture project that emphasizes that people can live together in peace and love, side by side and embrace the wounds of the past with the richness of all their differences is expected.

Place: Place will be evaluated according to the design.

Scale: Scale was not given to the artist. If the work is selected, the artist and the administration will exchange views on the scale of application.

For workshop in METAL AND STONE

Free theme

Requirements for both the events:
Artists partaking in the workshop will be appointed by a jury formed by İzmir Metropolitan Municipality based on the application forms sent in. A total of 10 artists will be chosen to participate in the Workshop. The number of participating artists can be less than 10, should the jury see fit.
 
The designs sent in by the applicant artists should be genuine and not previously implemented. Artists can send a maximum of two different designs. As the art works will be placed on public areas, they should be of appropriate size as per the urban scale.

Materials will be provided by the Administration. The Artist can choose between the materials or can use a mixture.
 

Metal/Stone
The Artist should indicate the type and the amount of metal needed in his/her application form. For the Artist who chooses to use marble, maximum 3m3 of marble will be provided. The artist can use additional materials other than the ones the Administration provides; however, the technical solutions and expenses are the responsibility of the Artist.

Bronze
The Artist should indicate the amount of clay needed, the materials for the structure and all technical requirements in the Application Form. The Artist can use additional materials other than the ones the Administration provides; however, the technical solutions and materials need to be consult with administration. Artists are to bring their own hand and special electrical tools such as big, small spirals. The Artist should indicate, in detail, all materials needed for cutting, crimping, bending and bonding and all materials, including consumables for the production, assembly and pedestal of the handiwork in the Application Form.
 
The Artist should indicate, in detail, all materials needed for cutting, crimping, bending and bonding and all materials, including consumables (cutting type and details such as CNC, laser and plasma, assembly details such as screwing, welding, surface treatments, welding types, welding machines and glue, consumables such as screws, pipes and tubes, surface cleansers and cleaning equipments) for the production, assembly and the pedestal of the handiwork in the Application Form. The Administration is not responsible for materials and technical services not indicated on the Application Form. Artists will bring their own hand tools.

Working hours are set as 08:30 to 19:00. However, alterations can be made on days that the program requires. The Artist is responsible of being present in the work area during work hours and complying with the work program. Exceptional circumstances will be evaluated by the Administration.

The transportation and accommodation expenses, including breakfast, lunch and dinner, of the artists participating in the Workshop will be covered by the Administration.

  • Transportation includes round trip economy class flight tickets and airport transfer for all the artists.
  • The artist will be staying at a 4 star hotel in a single room.
  • The artists are responsible for the travel-accommodation and food costs for their companions.
  • The artists are responsible of getting their own insurance, tetanus and Hepatitis B shots.

 

Workshop in Bronze Honorarium
The €7500 payment of the artists will be done in two installments by the contractor for the organization services of the 8th Workshop.

Workshop in Metal and Stone Honorarium:
The €4000 payment of the artists will be done in two installments by the contractor for the organization services of the 8th Workshop.
In case the works of art are not delivered within the time frame the artist has notified for any reason, the decision made by the Administration will be implemented. The Administration will own all rights to the unfinished work of art.
 
The participation of the artists who have earned the right to participate in the workshop but will not be able to, with notification, attend and artists who are, with no notification, not in the workshop within 2 days of the starting date, will be cancelled.
 
Documents in the application forms will be available for use in press releases and publications. İzmir Metropolitan Municipality will own the copyrights and the rights to exhibit, temporarily expose elsewhere, catalogue, and photograph, publish and promote the works of art.
 
All artists are deemed to have agreed to being present at the opening and closing ceremonies.

Groups of students, youngsters, cyclists, senior citizens, disabled citizens etc. will be brought to the workshop systematically. Each artist participating in the workshop can, for 2 hours in 1 working day, form an atelier with children from İzmir and can have art activities. It is suggested that the artists participating in the workshop should bring, with them, documents consisting of visual materials of the cultural and artistic values relating to their cities and countries.

HOW TO APPLY:

The application file, on grounds of which the participating artists will be decided, will consist of these items;

  • Application Form filled out in detail (can be found here: www.izmirworkshop.org or you can require it also at info@aiesm.com).
  • No more than a single typed A4 page of the artist’s curriculum vitae, in English or Turkish, specifying the 10 most important activities attended.
  • A visual document presenting 6 of the artist’s works. The photographs must be 72 dpi.
  • A drawing of the composition from different perspectives that the artist will execute at the end of the Workshop.
  • A detailed inventory of the materials to be used by the artist.
  • A diagram of installation and a diagram of the sculpture and lighting, if necessary.
  • A detailed drawing of the pedestal and a clarification of its materials.
  • A brief statement of the composition in English or Turkish, if deemed necessary by the artist.
  • The application form, only on PDF format, consisting of above items and not over 1,5 MB in total, should be sent to the below address by e-mail no later than 13th January 2020, 17:00 (local Turkish time GMT +2).
  • Applications sent by e-mail will be accepted only. Deficient applications will not be accepted.
