Sculptor Symposium BALANCE (german: Gleichgewicht)
26.Sept. - 3.Oct.2021
WOLF WERK - Hall 109
Open Call: May 26th 2021 - Deadline: July 26th 2021
Sculpture challenges to experience haptically. An experience in presence that has only been possible to a very limited extent since the beginning of the Corona pandemic in the spring of 2020. In the hope of being able to be sociable again in the late summer/fall of 2021, the steel sculptor Georg-Friedrich Wolf is initiating a sculptors' symposium along classical linesi.
Sculptors from all over Europe are invited to express themselves in their materials, be it steel, stone or wood, on the theme of "balance" and to benefit from the synergies of the symposium. Cross-material experiences as well as the interplay of materials under mutual inspiration and/or assistance are also welcome.
The theme of BALANCE is to be explored in its sculptural and thematic meaning. On the one hand, material, volume and masses challenge the sculptor per se to seek a balance; on the other hand, artistic creative states must be balanced. n the historic Hall 109, the Wolf-Werk in Darmstadt, three to four sculptors will come together over a period of one week for creative exchange and joint work on different sculptures.
In physics, balance equals standstill. Movement and dynamics can only take place when forces are in disequilibrium, that is, when they act on each other. In art history, balance is praised as the ideal of balanced composition, the golden ratio. It can be all the more exciting to provoke this through deliberately created imbalance.
The symposium BALANCE challenges the participants to deal with these aspects by means of interdisciplinary material references: To take on balance, or imbalance, together!
At the end of the symposium, the works will be presented at a three-day closing event with artist talks, sculptor lectures and an exhibition of the works created during the symposium.
