International Neopolis Sculpture Symposium

An international Stone Sculpture Symposium will be held in 2022. The "International Neopolis Sculpture Symposium" will be carried out in the cooperation of Municipality of Kuşadası, Kuşadası Altın Güvercin Art Culture and Promotion Foundation, Mehmet Nuri Göçen Art Culture Education Foundation and Symposium Curator Özlem Şengönül, Hakan Şengönül.

The purpose of the symposium is to bring qualified contemporary art pieces to Kuşadası, to contribute to the transformation of Kuşadası into an open-air sculpture museum and to promote Kuşadası in the international art platform.

General information
The 1st International Neopolis Sculpture Symposium will be held in Kuşadası between the dates of September 26 to November 3, 2022.  

The artists who will participate in the symposium will be determined by regarding the application files sent by the artists and by 3 people to be selected by Kuşadası Municipality Chairmanship, 2 people by KUSAV, 2 people by Mehmet Nuri Göçen Foundation for Culture and Education and by curator Hakan-Özlem ŞENGÖNÜL, to a total committee of 9 people.
The designs to be submitted by the artists who will apply to the symposium must have original character and have not been applied elsewhere before. Since the works will be placed in public spaces, they must be of appropriate size for the city scale.
At the end of the symposium, if each artist has completed the works, a certificate of participation and a plaque approved by the Kuşadası Municipality will be given.
 
Selection
10 artists and 2 assistants will attend the symposium. One of the participants will be an Artist determined by Kuşadası Municipality. If the jury deems necessary, the number of participants may be less than 10 people.
 
Material
Approximately 3 m3 Marmara marble can be used as sculpture material or the marble extracted in the region if it is suitable to carve the marble  

Theme

Property
The property of the works belongs to Kuşadası Municipality. It is at the disposal of the Municipality to transport the works to be put in the museum or to participate them in temporary exhibitions. The artist allows others to follow the work process and viewing of his/her works. Kuşadası Municipality has the right to use the images for promotional purposes and to change the location of the statue. Additionally, all rights of disposition of the works belong to Kuşadası Municipality.

The works of the artists will be placed in the places determined by the Kuşadası Municipality Chairmanship.  

Food and Accommodation
Transportation, accommodation, breakfast, lunch, and dinner of the artists who participate in the symposium will be met by the Symposium Committee.

Honorary and refund for the artists
The transportation fee for artists from abroad is 2.000 Turkish Liras and 1.250 Turkish Liras for the artists from Turkey. Each artist will obtain their own flight tickets.
Each artist who makes his/her work in the determined time and place will be paid a total of 30.000 TL (Eighteen Thousand Turkish Liras) including taxes, as general expenses and copyright.
 2 assistants will be selected from university students. 5.000 TL will be paid to assistants.
All fees described above will be paid after the works of the artists are delivered to the administration and with the submission of an expense account.

The participation of artists, who declare their inability to attend the symposium or who are not present at the symposium without giving any excuse within 3 days of the start date of the symposium, will be cancelled and no fees will be payable.

Artists are obliged to be in the symposium area during working hours and to comply with the symposium calendar. Exceptional situations that may arise are evaluated by the Symposium Committee, provided that they are notified without delay.

Visitor groups such as students, young people, cyclists, elders, and disabled people will be brought to the working area systematically. Artists who wish to do so will be able to organize an art workshop activity with the children of Kuşadası as a 2-hour workshop program within 2 working days. It is recommended for the artists participating in the symposium to bring with them a working document, an introductory document containing visual material of cultural and artistic values or works of their cities and countries to share with the audience and art circles.

The visuals, stories of the works, and CVs of all the sculptors who will take part in the 2022 Sculpture Symposium must be submitted to the Kuşadası Municipality Chairmanship by the curator before the symposium start date.  

All documents of all sculptors who will participate in the 2022 Sculpture Symposium must be submitted to the institution by the curator before the start date.

Only 1 (one) person can accompany each artist participating in the symposium, provided that they stay in the same room. The breakfast, lunch, and dinner and accommodation expenses of the person accompanying the artist will be met by the Symposium, however they will be liable for their own arrival and departure transportation expenditures.  No separate fees will be paid to the person accompanying the artist for their   assistance and works to the artist during the symposium.

Working Conditions

  • For the artists who will use marble as a material, a maximum 3 cubic meters of marble will be provided by the administration. The artists must specify the marble they need to make their work and the size of the plinth if any, and the equipment they will need for assembly in the application file.
  • Artists are obliged to bring their own electrical and small hand tools and their consumables.
  • The technical solution and expense for the use of additional materials other than assembly are to be met by the artist.
  • The artists will be provided with 220W electricity, extension cable, canopy as well as a crane and hammer drill in the symposium area.
  • Day and night security guards will be provided  to ensure safety in the work area.
  • Kuşadası Municipality will not be responsible for any injuries, losses and occupational accidents that may happen to participants, third parties and other workers.
  • A technician will be on duty during the symposium for the maintenance of all kinds of tools.
  • Artists are obliged to obtain their own accident insurance and vaccinations such  as tetanus and hepatitis B  and to take COVID-19 measures.
  • The work will take place outdoors. Artists must be prepared for seasonal weather conditions such as sudden rain and hot weather.

 

In case the works are not realized within the symposium dates for any reason (except for force majeure), Kuşadası Municipality and the Symposium Committee have the right to decide not to make any payment to the artist, including royalties. As a result of these decisions, only Kuşadası Courts and Enforcement Offices are authorized to resolve any disagreements which may be experienced with artists and which cannot be resolved through friendly settlement.
The Municipality Chairmanship may terminate the contract unilaterally if it determines that the articles in the 2nd International Neopolis Sculpture Symposium Specification and Contract are broken, the service is not executed efficiently, the responsibilities in the specification are not fulfilled and in cases of force majeure.  
In the event the Specification is terminated with, the obligations set within this specification terminates also.

  • It is obligatory for the 10 artists and 2 assistants who will be participating in the 2022 International Neopolis Sculpture Symposium to submit this individually signed contract in its original copy (with the wet signature) to the administration before the start date of the symposium via the curator.
  • For the parts that are not understood in English, the Turkish specification/contract will be applied.   

Artists participating in the symposium are deemed to have accepted the symposium contract specification and calendar.
 
HOW TO APPLY:
The files to be taken as a basis for the selection of the artists to participate in the symposium will contain the following information and documents.

  • Application form (require to the email address below or to info@aiesm.com).
  • A CV in English or Turkish with a photo, not exceeding one typewriter page, in which the artist states the 10 most important activities he/she attended.
  • Visual document in jpeg format introducing five works of the artist.
  • The drawing showing the work that the artist will perform in the symposium from different angles, the photographs of the model, the assembly scheme, if any, additional materials to be used in the sculpture. If it is necessary, an explanation in English or Turkish about the work can be included in the file.

 

Application file containing the above documents and not exceeding 1.5 MB in total must be sent by e-mail to the address below until 23:59 on 12/08/2022.
Only applications submitted by e-mail will be accepted.
Incomplete applications will not be considered.
