Call for sculpture in Italy

The Committee for the Erection of a Monument in Trieste to the Memory of Maria Theresa of Austria, announces a competition between artists in order to create an artistic work in the center of the Piazza del Ponterosso depicting the Empress Maria Teresa of Austria (1717-1780), Archduchess ruler of Austria, apostolic king of Hungary, queen reigning of Bohemia and Croatia and Slavonia, reigning duchess of Parma and Piacenza, reigning duchess of Milan and Mantua, lady of Trieste and moreover grand duchess consort of Tuscany and empress consort of the Holy Roman Empire as wife of Francis I of Lorraine.

Characteristics of the monument

The proposed works will have to interpret the theme in a key that necessarily includes a figurative component referring to the figure of Maria Teresa, while not rejecting the possibility of designing and presenting a work that is not composed of a base and a statue.

Below are the indications to follow for the design and construction of the monument:

  • Location: sea side of Piazza del Ponterosso, in a central position;
  • Maximum ground level of the monument: approximately 3,50 lmx 3,50 lm (lm: linear meters) excluded: compensation hooves, which could lead to a maximum indicative dimension inscribed in a circle of 4.00 lm of diameter;
  • Maximum height: 7.50 lm, which can be distributed on a base / statue / other elements;
  • Materials: the work can be made with techniques and materials freely chosen, provided that the characteristics of absolute stability, durability (weather resistance, non-scratch and anti-graffiti) are guaranteed;
  • Security: the monument must not constitute an obstacle for the use of the square, it must also be stable and not easily scalable.
  • Solutions other than the above dimensional indications may also be presented, provided they are adequately motivated and aimed solely at the realization of a work that respects parameters of high artistic quality and adequate insertion into the context.

The works will be exhibited within an appropriate space made available by the Municipality of Trieste, within which the popular jury, made up of citizens residing in the territory of the province of Trieste, will be able to express their vote in a registered manner.
The selection of the winner of the competition will be the result of the sum of the vote between the jury and the vote of the public (50% each).
For a period of fifteen days a reproduction of the proposed work will be exhibited on a reduced scale, made with materials that are different from those proposed for the work of art, from which one can still understand the technique and the materials used, as described in the report referred to in the previous point.
The choice of the scale of the sketch and of the possible reproduction of the work, must be weighted in order not to deliver packages and proposals of excessive size. Elaborated products will not be admitted to the competition in ways other than those indicated or otherwise delivered after the deadline, even if the late delivery was due to force majeure, unforeseeable circumstances or facts attributable to third parties.

Prizes

The Committee will recognize the following prizes to the five finalist artists:

  • the 1st classified, winner of the call, € 15,000.00 (fifteen thousand / 00);
  • to the 2nd classified euro 8,000.00 (eight thousand / 00);
  • 3rd place € 5,000.00 (five thousand / 00);
  • at the 4th and 5th place, € 1,000.00 (one thousand / 00) each.
