Body&Soul Festival Design Bursary 2019
Body&Soul Bursary Grants are designed to fulfil the artistic and decorative requirements for the festival in 2019 and beyond, while providing artists an opportunity to fulfil a proposed project and present new work to a large audience in an outdoor environment. Bursaries are geared towards professional artists, technicians, production managers and creatives working in a relevant sector, with experience in delivering similar projects on budget and on time. Body&Soul encourage submissions that develop a high-quality, imaginative artistic practice; and can reach and engage with diverse audiences.
We are requesting submissions for the design, fabrication and execution of a large-scale gateway to act as a portal to the Sanctuary at Body&Soul 2019.
Requirements
A wide span (4-5 metres) so festival goers can walk through and around the structure (minimum 3m height to walk under),
Preferably built on a timber frame and dressed in materials that are in keeping with the natural aesthetic of the Sanctuary,
Consideration that thousands of people will view the piece in the light hours of day and dark hours of night,
The structure must be transportable and be easily erected and dismantled. All elements must pack down to fit on a pallet and be transportable on a curtainsider. Each pallet to be no more than approx. 5m length x 1m depth (can stack up to 1m high). Successful candidates will be individuals or groups with a proven record of outstanding visual art design and installation and relevant experience of working within a tight budget and build timeframe with a professional team.
Theme of RITUAL
For our tenth edition, Body&Soul are looking for creative interpretations of the theme of RITUAL. Our theme will occupy the ambiguous ground that lies between reverence and ridicule, faith and belief, the absurd and the stunningly sublime. Gateways can be symbolic of many things in our lives, representing beginnings and endings; gains and losses; transitions, rites of passage, the portal between the conscious and the sacred. Faith, ritual, myth, folklore are anthropological insights – glimpses into the psyche – and offer a way to free the imagination. To respond to them prompts letting go of the tangible, and an acceptance that possible solutions and ways for the future might be found beyond the subconscious.
We invite applicants to reflect on the theme of RITUAL and be inspired, or not, by, the sacred / shrines / temples / icons / reverence / rites / nature / play / mythology / folklore / mysticism / ceremony / community.
Specifics
Submissions should contain draft designs and reference images as well as a budget for pre build and installation. All site requirements and initial transport to site should be included in this.
Body&Soul will have ownership of the piece after the first festival and will look after storage and transport from this point. A written description should accompany the designs along with an installation plan and timeline. Please also provide a resume of relevant work with images or video content.
