Festival du bois flotté

The Floating Wood Festival Organizing Committee invites artists from here and abroad to apply to participate in the 19th edition of the “Festival du bois flotté”, an event that highlights both the intangible heritage (Romancero of Canada) and driftwood.
Organizers are looking for sculptural visual artists with an approach that can link classical sculpture with a contemporary artistic vision.
Pieces of driftwood, 24 inch (60 cm) diameter and 8 ft (2.5 m) tall cedar logs will be provided to selected artist-sculptors.

Location: Sainte-Anne-des-Monts (Gaspésie).

Time:  From Wednesday, July 31 to Sunday, August 4, 2019.

About the Festival:

  • Unique in Quebec, our family-friendly event brings together artists who have to create a four-day open-air work (sculpture) from driftwood while interacting with the public;
  • It is not a competition, all participating artists receive the same scholarship and support;
  • Participating artists must create their work based on the subject of the story "Bonnet Rouge" version of Mr. LĂ©on Collin, St-Joachim Tourelles (Sainte-Anne-des-Monts), story collected by Carmen Roy . No copy manuscript of the tale of LĂ©on Collin has been found, however we have the unpublished recording done by Carmen Roy. The registration is unfortunately incomplete. Artists are invited to invent their own end of the story Bonnet rouge by LĂ©on Collin.
  • Each artist provides his tools and what he needs to protect himself from the sun and the rain (shelter, canvas, warm clothes). The GaspĂ©sie is a beautiful Nordic region, the event takes place at the edge of the sea, so the possibility of Nordet, cold wind from the northeast;
  • Once completed, the works become the property of the Planning, Sustainable, Environmental and Cultural Development Committee (CADDEC), manager of the Floating Wood Festival;
  • The works must be carved. Installations, assembly and land art are not accepted. Works can be enhanced by applying an oil or stain, but not painting. It is mandatory that the sculpture has a minimum height of 1.5 m, and that it is designed in a spirit of sustainability and easy to move.
  • The organization provides the driftwood needed for the works, electricity, heavy machinery and labor to help the artists move and install the driftwood pieces. Liability insurance also protects the artists for the duration of the event.
