PLASTIC ARTS RESIDENCIES IN FRANCE

4 Day Residences - March / April - September / October 2020
The association ADN - Usine Utopik is a Center of Contemporary Creation implanted in rural environment, in the old horticultural greenhouses of Tessy Bocage (in Normandy region).
Located in a commune of 1500 inhabitants, the residences at Usine Utopik offer a privileged place for artists to design a project giving rise to an exhibition. The center helps to support artists in all phases of the work from research to dissemination. L'Usine Utopik is a space for experimentation and research to support and promote artistic projects, to promote meetings with the public through times of exchanges, discoveries and practices.

Rules
During the residency, artists are asked to question their work with regard to the territory, its history and its geography.
The artist must take into account the specificities of the building in its creative process and its presentation. The greenhouse of Usine Utopik is a very large space of 1500 m2 including workshops and an exhibition area of 400m2 (20 m wide and length and 4 to 6 m high).
This space offers a very high brightness, limiting certain projects (diffusion of images from video projectors, tv screens, etc.) The building has thermal differences related to the "greenhouse effect". This constraint must be taken into account for projects using fragile materials and also for photography.
All these parameters must be studied for the projects presenting videos, photos, drawings, fragile installations, etc ... A visit of the places before the residence can be advised to evaluate the feasibility of the project.
The artists welcomed are in a process of opening to the public: it is to show a stage of work, a meeting with the public, a workshop of artistic practice.
The residence takes place over a period of 54 days. The presence of the artist is required for the duration of the residency ie 45 days of mandatory presence. During the residency, if the artist must be absent for possible solicitations, including participation in external events, he must respect the authorized days of absence or 3 consecutive days (out of a total of 9 days) provided that is compatible with the schedule of residence (reception of the public) and the sheet of presence signed every day. Failure to comply with this agreement will include a daily penalty of € 50 (per day of absence).
Projects with a digital dimension can be envisaged via the high definition camera device. This is to encourage innovative projects including new technologies. This material made available to artists can serve as artistic support or exchange tools via the videoconferencing device used in network with the colleges and high schools of the department.

FINANCIAL MODALITIES
Financial assistance of a total amount of 3750 € is allocated for the residence including a creation grant (payment of a lump sum) and financial assistance for the production costs associated with the residence, up to a maximum of 1500 € on presentation of supporting documents.
An agreement is signed between the artist and the association.

PRACTICAL HOSTING PROCEDURES
Housing is supported by Usine Utopik.
The apartment is occupied by the guest artists simultaneously in residence. The artist has a bedroom, the living rooms including the dining room, kitchen, bathroom and toilet are common areas.
A workshop is available in the center.
Technical assistance can be envisaged within the limits of the means of the structure.
The Usine Utopik provides electro-portable tools (for more precision on the equipment, consult us)
The water and electricity charges are assumed by the Usine Utopik.
Wi-Fi access is provided in each workshop.
The Usine Utopik covers all the expenses related to the inauguration of the exhibition (communication, opening ...).
Telephone calls, trips and food expenses are covered by the artist.
For the residence, it is strongly recommended to be carried because the town of Tessy does not benefit from public transport (bus and train). The nearest town, Saint-Lô is 18 kms.

COUNTERPARTS
The artist must be present on the opening days of the center.
During the residency, the artist is invited to present his/her work, to conduct meetings and workshops for different audiences (schools, health centers, recreation centers ...) to exchange, raise awareness and involve audiences in the creative process.

DISSEMINATION AND MEDIATION
Works made during the residency remain the property of the artist. At the end of the stay, the artist undertakes to present his/her artistic project in the exhibition space, giving rise to actions with the public led by the mediator. Usine Utopik publishes a fascicule in quad format A5 to restore the work done during the residency.
Usine Utopik supports the organization of opening times to the public to allow artists to meet and interact with children, adults, professionals .

HOW TO APPLY:

Selection is based on the following elements to be provided:

• a note of intention describing the artistic project, the research that the artist wishes to undertake as well as the media envisaged (problem (s), objective (s), techniques (s), axis (s) of work ...) . This project will have to be thought in-situ taking into account the constraints of the place.
• an artistic file containing visuals of works and / or exhibitions and a text on the work.
• Updated Curriculum Vitae
• a copy of the attestation of subjection or affiliation to the Maison des artistes-social security, or AGESSA (applicants not registered with MDA-social security or AGESSA can not apply) or similar document proving professional status for foreign artists.
• social security number.
• SIRET number or any administrative and fiscal document proving the publishing capacity of bills.
• a certificate of civil liability insurance.
• The works can be presented in the form of photos on dvd, cd or USB ... (short pieces or extracts).
• mail with an envelope in the format of the file, stamped and denominated in the name and address of the artist for the return of the unsuccessful files.

Participants will be informed of the results of the selection by e-mail.
Due to a large number of files sent each year, we will unfortunately be able to provide each of the details on the refusal.
E-mails are accepted. Only files sent in PDF format (not downloadable on server) will be studied.

The selection committee will meet in mid-October 2019. Shortlisted artists will be invited to a telephone or skype interview from that date.
