Sculpture symposium in stone and metal “The Roots 2022”

In the occasion of the celebration of 150 years of Aš to promotion to the city, we announce the sculpture symposium in stone and metal “The Roots 2022”.

Mountain tops are often border between individual nations and states. However, they have been moved more than once in the history of Europe. The nations blended with their neighbors and cooperated together. Common bonds built up generations. All of these has been broken. But, art has no border. The roots left here by past generations, are an inspiration to us.

We want to build the place for good life.

We want to see artists working in our city and exulting of works of Europeans.

The city of Aš supports the relationship and respect for traditional and modern sculptural materials and wants to provide sculptors and visitors conditions for mutual enrichment.

Visitors can watch the art work since first stone break and weld metal. So, they will be part of the birth of statues and so they will have an opportunity to identify with emerging work. Except interesting and also not knowing moments, this experience brings also a new view on fine art and cultivates the feeling of the viewer. Such enjoyment moves sense not only of young people to a new approach to the culture but at the same time helps to protect all of the artworks placed in a public space.

Selected artists will be norified on April 5, 2022
Date of the Symposium: September 3-17, 2022, arrival within 3 p. m. (can be agreed).
Opening of the working area: September 17, 2022 at 11 a.m.
Inauguration ceremony: December 28, 2022

Selection

8 artists will be selected by a jury composed by representatives of the city, art galleries, city architects, organizers. The jury reserves the possibility to invite less than 8 artists if necessary.

Organizer provides:

• accommodations, food and drinks and cost transportations (5 CZK/km) max. 5.000 CZK.
• Blocks of sandstone from Horice, 1m3, and steel according to the sculptor’s needs.
• Electricity connection 220V.
• Protection of the working area from the weather (tent)
• promotion in media (print, TV, radio, social media)
• the honorarium of 30.000 CZK to each artist for the realization of the work.

During the symposium a public voting will take place, and at the end the People Prize will be awarded to the winner.

The works will be placed on a concrete pedestal in a public space of AŠ.

The selected sculptors:

• must be a citizen of European Union
• must have health and accident insurance
• have to respect the work conditions and must have liability insurance. The organizer is not responsible for damage caused by the artist.
• use their onw tools and equipment during the work
• should be present at the workplace during public access
• are responsible for the originiality of the design of their works
• will provide the conceptual material, designs and models
• agree with the use of the photos and his own personal data as promotional material by the organizer
• donate their art works to the city, without prejudice of copyright.

HOW TO APPLY:

• a filled and signed application form (require to the email below)
• contact information
• 3-5 photos of previous works
• design of the work in sketch, or photos of the model (pdf, jpg, tiff format). It is necessary to consider the durability and resistence of using elements.
