2023 Open-Call Residencies for Fellowships, Writers, Artist Families
Franconia Sculpture Park (FSP) operates a 50-acre outdoor museum, an artist-in-residence program, robust public programming, and expansive educational initiatives. FSP is a cultural anchor to the Twin Cities with a national reach into contemporary art communities and a growing audience of nearly 200,000 visitors each year. We support sculpture and installation including land art, ceramics, contemporary craft, experimental sound/music, and performance art. Franconia provides a communal residency experience where up to 18 selected artists live on-site at our 4500 sq. ft. farmhouse throughout the year. Opportunities include Artist Family, Writers, and Fellowship residencies.
Annual Theme: Public Art IS Public Health
FELLOWSHIP RESIDENCY
Artist Stipend: $7500
May 15 - June 28, 2023 | August 16 - September 30, 2023
The Franconia Fellowship supports mid-career artists working in sculpture and installation, including land art, ceramics, contemporary craft, experimental sound/music, and performance art.
Fellowships for artists making object-based work offer a self-directed residency and $7500 stipend to fabricate and install work for exhibition in the 50-acre outdoor sculpture park. These fellows also stay on-site for up to six weeks within the timeframes offered; residency dates will be scheduled directly with the residency director.
Fellowships for artists working in performance include a $7500 stipend and dynamic professional opportunities. Residents will stay for 2 to 6 weeks at Franconia followed by a one-week stay in Minneapolis with Franconia partner Dreamsong, where fellows will present a public program. Additionally, these fellows will have an opportunity to present their work for inclusion in the 2023 Satellite Art Show in Miami. Fair Director and performance art curator, Quinn Dukes, will conduct studio visits with artists during their residency at Franconia and discuss the feasibility of their projects at that time.
ARTIST FAMILY RESIDENCY
Artist Stipend: $2000
July 12-16, 2023 or July 19-23, 2023 | Youth (Aged 8-13)
July 26-30, 2023 | Teen Intensive (Grades 9-12)
The Artist Family Residency invites Artist Parents and Artist Youth to be in process together for a one- to two-week process-based residency at Franconia. Coinciding with our Youth Installation Summer Camps, Artist Youth have the option to attend camp for free during the day or join the Artist Parent on-site for research. For artist parents, this is a self-directed residency. The Artist Family benefits both from the individual creative process and also through togetherness while exploring the connection between art and ecology. A culminating Parents & Community sharing of Summer Camp Works provides a joined capstone experience for the Artist Family.
WRITERS RESIDENCY
Artist Stipend: $1000
January 11 - 25, 2023 | October 11 - 25, 2023
Seven accomplished writers will join the Writers Residency program at Franconia Sculpture Park in 2023. Writers span a range of arts-focused disciplines and will receive a stipend, full room & board, and a two-week residency at the 50-acre outdoor sculpture park. Writers will immerse themselves in the new environment and embrace the time and space to move forward in their work. Residents with an interest or practice in art writing will have the possibility to publish a piece with Mn Artists, the Walker Museum’s platform for interdisciplinary arts writing. Writers are invited to participate in an online public reading.
