Artist in Residence in Iceland
Application for artist residency from Monday the 25th of March to Monday the 15th of April 2019 in Skagafjörður region, North West Iceland.
For a new exhibition to open (planned June 2019), privately owned and funded historical centre in the region of Skagafjörður, Iceland, there is a call for artists to help preserve and visualize parts of the very important history of the country, a civil war which led to that Iceland was brought under Norwegian rule in 1262.
This new exhibition is about a period called the “Age of Sturlungar”. The accent is on the story of a man called Thordur kakali. Please note that this period is not a part of the Viking Age. For further information see the brief history of Thordur kakali at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%9E%C3%B3r%C3%B0ur_kakali_Sighvatsson
The battle of Haugsnes took place very close to the centre, and there is a grand memorial for the battle at the site, made by Sigurður Hansen, the head of the centre. There are more than 1300 boulders in battle order, each representing a combatant, and those who fell are marked with iron crosses (see photo). For selected (foreign) artists airfare will be paid for up to 70.000 IKR (max. around 565 euros) as well as travel to the centre’s location. The artists will self book and pay for the flights and then get a refund as soon as they bring the invoice to the centre. For all artists, lodging will be arranged and they will receive a stipend in two part. First part, 105.000 IKR (around 850 euros), will be paid on arrival and the second part, also 105.000 IKR (around 850 euros), upon, and is depending on completion of the works. Each artist is expected to create at least two pieces of art and materials (for up to 50.000 IKR / around 400 EUROS) will be provided and covered by the centre. Each artist is provided with a private bedroom and shares the remainder of the houses, which are fully furnished with all linen and general household facilities supplied. Meals are not included. Artists are responsible for their own insurance and visa.
After receiving the application, each artist will be sent two to three parts of the story to interpret this into two or three pieces of art and sends back his/her vision (in words, photos or drawings) of how to depict that part. Including in which material the work is to be done as well as the size of the work (max size of the work can be approx. 180x50x50 cm; or 180x50 cm; 180 cm being the height). All types of works are taken into consideration. The final selection of artists will take place after the ideas have been received by the organization. If the artist is not chosen, the organization will not use the information and creative expression of this artist in any way. Collaboration between artists is highly encouraged on scene and appreciated. After completion of the works, the artist gives all rights of the works in ownership of the centre. The artists will give permission for publishing, exhibiting all works for future use. The names of the artist(s) who made this piece of art will be visible.
