Marcal Marble Sculpture Symposium

MARCAL, Calatorao´s marble association, organizes the public and monumental sculpture Symposium in order to improve the sculptural and artistic development of Calatorao´s Stone museum, property of Calatorao´s local government.
MARCAL, integrated both by the the varied quarrying enterprises from Calatorao (Pymcasa, CIM y Ania) and the town hall, would like to promote a public monumental sculpture contest in the aim of promoting our popular local marble, as well as with the objective of improving artistic and cultural development in this area.

Aims:
Symposium´s aim is to create Calatorao´s stone sculptures. The stone will be provided by the organizer institution. Works must be unpublished and originals and they will be located in outdoors museum “Calatorao´s stone”.
Working period from 16th to 23rd October 2020. Awards on 24th October 2020.

Economic aid for participants:

The sculptors that will be selected to participate in this contest, will get a 600 € economic aid.
Artists must take into account that this fund includes the following concepts: idea, design, photographs, the work creation and property rights.
The organization will pay for the sculptors´ stay and food during the symposium (from 16th to 24th October ). The organizer will also provide transport from Zaragoza to Calatorao on 16th and on 24th October.
All the prizes will be object of taxes according to Spanish law.

Technical requirements

  • Projects must be original and unpublished, not selected nor awarded in any other contest or competition, and they cannot be a total or a partial copy of others already built or in process.
  • The topic is free, up the author.
  • Authors can use any technique for the design and the creation of the work that they consider more useful in order to achieve their expressive goal.
  • Calatorao´s stone will be the material used for creating the sculpture. The organizer institution will donate to the sculptors, at the work place, a piece of stone from 0,50 m3 and not more of 1,5 meters length.
  • Additionally, it is allowed to use two other elements, apart from Calatorao´s stone, such as strings. Anyway, those elements must be a secondary part from the sculpture.

 

The organizer will provide the selected participants with:

  • a civil responsibility and accidents assurance.
  • electric connection and machines, but they must bring their own tools to realize the work. The organizers will help the authors to move the piece of stone if necessary.
  • Sculptors willing to participate must follow all the security rules and EPIS such as, security shoes, gloves, glasses and face mask at least.

 

Working time
Symposium: 16-23 October 2020, from 8.30 to 20.30.
Artists registration and assignment of the stone pieces: 16th October 2020 from 8.00.

Works will be developed at the different quarries of the village, at specific areas. They will also have to work at a public square.
In order to publicize the work to the public, all work will be developed in the public square, so that the selected sculptors, should inform the organization of the exact measurements of the stone block they want, in order to provide the material as precisely as possible to the desired volume.

The blocks will be adapted to each of the proposals of the six sculptors. Each Quarry will provide two blocks of stone appropriate to the proposals of the sculptors.
If the artist wants to include any other additional material, he/she will have to provide it.
Artists will have to bring their own tools.

Awards
There will be two honorable mentions:
From the Jury. It will be given after Jury´s deliberation.
From the audience. It will be given after audience voting.

The awarded works will become part of Calatorao´s Town Hall collection, and they could be displayed at the outdoors Calatorao´s Stone Museum.

MARCAL Association will have the right of promoting the publication and exhibition of all the works presented to the simposium, and will keep the right of reproducing them in any other material in order to promote the contest.

Application:

  • Each participant can fill in the application form available on the website or require it to asociacionmarcal@gmail.com.
  • Completed application forms must be sent to the mail address asociacionmarcal@gmail.com until the following 6th of July 2020.
  • Attached with the application form, participants must send their artistic CV, as well as pictures of the design (elevation, profile and plant ) they are going to create in the symposium and five photographs from other marble or stone works, describing material and dimensions in order to discover their experience.
  • Application forms can be filled in both in Spanish and English.
